Orthodontists’ Valentine’s Day Offer: ‘Double the Love, Double the Courtesy’

Pediatric Dentist Karissa Koster, DMD, Brings Pediatric Dentistry to ARCH Orthodontics
(Issued Winter 2018) — Dr. Karissa Koster, a passionate and personable Pediatric Dentist, has joined the staff of ARCH Orthodontics. She is the first Pediatric Dentist on the staff.

She became Chief Resident at her Pediatric Dental Residency at The Lutheran Medical Center in Holyoke, MA, where she learned how rewarding the profession can be. Dr. Koster, who has been providing pediatric dental care on the South Shore, is a member of the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. In her spare time, she enjoys time with her family and friends, and exploring new places.

Canton Community Chanukah Menorah-Lighting Ceremony Draws Crowd
Police Chief Lights Candles
Canton, Mass. (Issued December 18, 2017) – The brightness of the Chanukah lights brought warmth to the crowd gathered for this year’s Canton community menorah-lighting ceremony — despite Saturday (12/16) evening’s 20-degree temperature and 10-degree wind chill factor.
The annual event — organized by Rabbi Mendy and Rivka Horowitz of the Chai Center of Canton – marks the joyous 8-day holiday of Chanukah which has been celebrated for some 2,000 years. It commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem following the surprise victory by the Maccabees over the much larger Seleucid (Syrian/Greek) army in the year 166 CE.
Canton Police Chief Kenneth Berkowitz assisted Rabbi Horowitz in lighting the 10-foot menorah (candelabra) and joined the crowd in traditional holiday blessings and song. Refreshments included latkes (potato pancakes), hot chocolate provided by the Schlossberg –Solomon Chapel of Canton, and Israeli donuts courtesy of Zayde’s Market in Canton.
The mission of the Chai Center of Canton is to reach out and create a warm atmosphere for Jews of all ages to explore and experience their heritage in a welcoming environment.

Dr. Sita Patel Is Named to ARCH Orthodontics Team
(Issued Winter 2017-18) — The start of the new year will bring Dr. Sita Patel to the ARCH Orthodontics team where she will improve the smiles and confidence of patients at ARCH offices in Bridgewater and on Cape Cod in Hyannis and Orleans.
The announcement was made by Dr. Andrew Chase and by his father, Dr. Robert Chavez, who founded ARCH over 43 years ago.
In December, Dr. Patel graduated from Seton Hill University’s Center for Orthodontics in Greensburg, PA, receiving her M.S. degree and Certificate in Orthodontics. She earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland-College Park, and completed dental school at Temple University where she earn her D.M.D. Orthodontists receive 2-3 years of additional training beyond dental school.
Dr. Chase said, “We are excited to add Dr. Sita to the ARCH team as she brings a wealth of experience, not only in traditional and cutting-edge Orthodontic treatments and techniques, but also in the use of Invisalign in which she has been an advanced treatment planner; on the diagnosis and management of sleep apnea with orthotic devices; and in oral and maxillofacial surgery – all areas that we focus on beyond traditional braces.” He added that the addition of Dr. Patel will greatly enhance scheduling in ARCH’s Bridgewater and Cape Cod offices in Hyannis and Orleans.

Dr. Adrienne Weisner Joins Team at ARCH Orthodontics

A graduate of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Weisner earned her Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Orthodontics from the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, and her B.A. from Vassar College.

One of Dr. Weisner’s favorite anecdotes: A 14-year old patient required a permanent tooth to be extracted. She requested the tooth from her dentist and created an elaborate composition of silver wire to hold the tooth which she now wears as a pendant around her neck: “An Orthodontist in the making!”
Dr. Weisner, a Board Certified member of the American Association of Orthodontists, is Chair of the Merrimack Valley District Dental Society. Volunteer activities include Operation Mouthguard at Harvard where she educated young adults about oral health, and Project Bridge where she provided dental care to homeless adults. Among outside interests are skiing, cooking, dancing, swimming, gardening, theater, music and travel. She is conversant in Spanish.

(Issued Fall/Winter 2017-18) — Studies show that the simple act of smiling activates neural messaging that benefits your health and happiness.
And now, a study at Nottingham University found people who were happy — smiling and in a good mood — when they went for their flu shot were better protected from getting ill. This is because a good mood boosts the immune system, helping it to react properly to the tiny dose of virus in a vaccination. Researchers found that “being in the right frame of mind on the day of an injection could cause the body to produce up to 14% more antibodies, thus increasing protection.”
Dr. Andrew Chase believes the study: He is in the ‘smile business.’ He says that ARCH Orthodontics, the practice founded by his father Dr. Robert Chavez 43 years ago, has improved the smiles and positive attitudes of over 25,000 patients. He says, “A great smile makes the person smiling more comfortable, and the positive feeling is reflected back from those they’re smiling at.”
A researcher writing in Psychology Today, said, “You’re actually better-looking when you smile: People treat you differently. You’re viewed as attractive, reliable, relaxed and sincere. And a study published in the journal Neuropsychologia says “When you view a person smiling, you actually feel rewarded. Each time you smile, you throw a little feel-good party in your brain.” Smiling activates the release of neuropeptides that help fight stress. Also, the feel-good neurotransmitters dopamine, endorphins and serotonin are all released when a smile flashes across your face. It relaxes your body and can lower your heart rate and blood pressure.
Dr. Chase says, “Many pharmaceutical anti-depressants influence the levels of serotonin in your brain, but with a smile, you don’t have to worry about negative side effects – and you don’t need a prescription from your doctor.”

November Is National Gratitude Month
Smile! You Have Lots of Reasons to Be Thankful… and your smile is one of them!
(Issued Fall 2017) — November is ‘National Gratitude Month’ – very fitting since Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of the month.
Most of us recall the story of how the first Thanksgiving was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World (in Plymouth, Mass.). The celebration of thanks lasted three days, and was attended by 53 Pilgrims and 90 Native Americans.
“We are very fortunate today to live in the greatest country, and a healthy America needs healthy citizens,” says Dr. Andrew Chase of ARCH Orthodontics. “Life is full of things to be thankful for – and that makes us smile. Some people are lucky to be born with a great smile. For others, Orthodontic treatment fixes crooked or poorly spaced teeth. And as our patients tell us, having a great smile is an investment which will reap benefits for a lifetime. A healthy and attractive smile creates a better impression on the outside that permeates from the inside. Dr. Chase suggests that each of us spend time this month reflecting on the meaning of gratitude and being thankful — an essential ingredient of a happy, fulfilling life. National Orthodontic Health Month: Educating Consumers, Debunking 7 Orthodontic Myths
(Issued Fall 2017) — During October, National Orthodontic Health Month, Dr. Andrew Chase of ARCH Orthodontics is taking the opportunity to set the record straight, to challenge and debunk common myths about orthodontic treatment. ARCH is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) which sponsors the annual observance.
Among the myths that Dr. Chase addresses:
Myth #1. Anyone who provides braces or clear aligners is an Orthodontist. To be an Orthodontist, a doctor has graduated from dental school, then completed 2-3 years in an accredited Orthodontic residency program. Only doctors with this level of formal education may ethically call themselves ‘Orthodontists.’
Myth #2. Orthodontists are so expensive. Orthodontists charge for the professional service they provide – customizing each patient’s treatment, expertly guiding teeth and jaws into a healthy, beautiful smile. Making it more affordable are flexible payment plans, no-interest financing, and, often, insurance. A healthy bite and great smile — an investment in a lifetime of oral and whole body health.
Myth #3. Office visits are not necessary to get straight teeth. With regular visits, the patient benefits from the Orthodontist’s timely action.

ARCH Orthodontics Announces Gluten-Free Practice
Among the first to perform comprehensive study in its service area
(Issued Fall 2017) — ARCH Orthodontics is among the first practices in its service area– that stretches from Boston to Hyannis — to certify that its offices are gluten-free.
According to Dr. Andrew Chase, “Most people are surprised to learn that some common dental materials and products contain gluten.” Gluten is the common name given to proteins found in wheat.
He adds, “There’s so much concern regarding unintentional sources of gluten, we certainly didn’t want parents worrying unnecessarily about their children’s retainers and other materials we use. We completed exhaustive research throughout our 9 offices and can confirm that ARCH Orthodontics is celiac friendly, completely gluten-free. Surprisingly, toothpaste may also be a source of gluten which is why we were sure to research the contents and specifically rely on gluten-free pre-pasted brushes, available for every patient at each visit. Since the mouth is part of the gastrointestinal tract, our clinical staff is trained to investigate for oral symptoms of gluten sensitivity.”
Dr. Chase explains that besides finding gluten in wheat products, there are non-dietary sources of gluten used in the manufacture of products such as plastics, dental equipment, and cosmetics. Some types of Orthodontic retainers contain a plasticized methacrylate polymer, a gluten derivative that is a common additive in plastics. He emphasized that, based on case studies, there does not seem to be enough information to demonstrate a true cause and effect between retainer use and gluten levels.
For ARCH’s research, the staff used Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) to investigate materials used in all types of traditional and invisible braces, and when unknown, ARCH contacted individual manufacturers. MSDS is a widely-used system for cataloging information on chemicals, chemical compounds and mixtures, and includes instructions for the safe use and potential hazards associated with a particular material or product.
Most patients might shrug, but for the 18 million Americans with gluten sensitivities, exposure can lead to digestive discomfort, abdominal pain, foggy thinking, chronic headache, joint pain, skin rashes and chronic fatigue. Some with gluten sensitivity may have the autoimmune disorder celiac disease, an inherited condition which affects an individual’s ability to digest gluten that can lead to a toxic reaction that can damage the small intestine. “We are proud of our 43-year track record of helping to build our patients’ looks and outlooks – always to the highest standards of our industry,” Dr. Chase said.

Octogenarian Loves Her Invisible Braces
“You’re never too old to have a beautiful smile!”
BRIDGEWATER, MASS. (Issued Fall 2017) — Beverly Albaugh may be one of the most senior braces patients in the world.

Patients are advised to wear them 22 hours a day, taking them out only to eat, brush and floss. Mrs. Albaugh had never heard of Invisalign. Orthodontists: The ‘Smile Specialists’
Moving teeth around takes precision, passion — and special training.
(Issued Summer 2017) — Dentists fix cavities. Orthodontists straighten teeth. That’s how most people view these groups of highly-trained professionals, but there’s a lot more.
While dentists specialize in teeth and gum issues — tooth decay, gum disease, tartar – and encouraging good oral hygiene along with biannual cleanings, Orthodontists specialize in helping teeth and jaws to work in union so you can speak, bite and chew comfortably and effectively. About 30% of today’s Orthodontic patients are adults, partly because new technology and techniques can be imperceptible and shorten treatment time.
