Two Ways to Hold a Wire
Every set of fixed braces works the same way: brackets bonded to your teeth, a wire threaded through them, and steady force guiding teeth into position. The difference between self-ligating braces and traditional braces is how the wire is held in each bracket.
Traditional brackets use a separate tie — usually a small elastic O-ring, sometimes a fine wire — wrapped around the bracket to hold the archwire in its slot. Those ties are what patients pick colors for at adjustment visits.
Self-ligating brackets have a built-in door or clip. The bracket itself opens, captures the wire, and closes. No elastics, nothing to replace, nothing to stretch out between visits.
What the Clip Actually Changes
Marketing around self-ligating systems has been loud for years, so it is worth separating what is well supported from what is oversold.
Supported by the evidence:
- Faster wire changes. Opening and closing clips is quicker than tying and untying a dozen elastics, so adjustment appointments tend to be shorter.
- Less to hold plaque. Elastic ties collect plaque and stain with coffee, tea, and tomato sauce. Fewer parts means fewer places for buildup, which helps hygiene at the margins.
- Consistent force over time. Elastic ties lose tension between visits. A clip does not stretch, so the wire stays seated the way it was set.
Frequently oversold:
- “Dramatically faster treatment.” Overall treatment time is driven mostly by your biology, the complexity of your bite, and whether you keep appointments — not by bracket design. Independent reviews have generally found no meaningful difference in total treatment length between systems.
- “No more tightening.” Wires are still changed and progressed. The mechanism differs; the plan does not disappear.
- “Painless.” Teeth are sore after adjustments regardless of bracket type. Reported differences are small.
Damon, Passive vs. Active, and Other Terms You’ll Hear
When you research this you will run into brand names and jargon. A quick translation:
Passive self-ligating brackets have a slide that closes over the wire without pressing on it, leaving the wire free to move within the slot — useful in early alignment when you want low friction.
Active self-ligating brackets have a spring clip that presses the wire into the slot, giving the orthodontist more control over tooth rotation and torque in the finishing stages.
Damon is a brand of passive self-ligating brackets, not a treatment philosophy you have to buy into. Plenty of practices use Damon brackets; plenty use other systems that work equally well in trained hands.
Many orthodontists, including ours, mix approaches within one case — a low-friction setup while teeth are being leveled, then brackets and wires that give tighter control while the bite is being finished. The system is a tool, not the treatment plan.
Does the Bracket Type Affect Comfort or Appearance?
Self-ligating brackets are usually a bit smaller in profile than a traditional bracket wrapped in an elastic tie, and without colored ties they look less conspicuous. Some patients prefer that; teens who enjoy picking colors at each visit sometimes prefer traditional ties for exactly the opposite reason.
If appearance is the deciding factor, the bigger levers are the material and position of the brackets rather than the ligation method: ceramic or clear brackets on the front of the teeth, lingual brackets like Brava behind the teeth, or removable clear aligners instead of brackets altogether.
Hygiene and Care Are the Same Either Way
Neither system excuses you from the work. Brush after meals with a soft brush angled at the gumline, clean under the wire with interdental brushes or a floss threader, and keep your dental cleanings on schedule during treatment. Avoid ice, hard candy, nuts, and anything sticky enough to pull a bracket off, and cut hard fruit and corn off the cob instead of biting in.
One practical advantage worth repeating: with no elastic ties, there is nothing to discolor. Patients who drink coffee or tea daily often notice this most. What Should Actually Drive Your Decision
Bracket hardware is one of the least important variables in your outcome. What matters far more:
- Diagnosis. A correct plan built from a full set of records — scan, photos, and radiographs — using the imaging described on our technology page.
- The clinician’s experience with your specific problem. Deep bites, open bites, impacted teeth, and asymmetries each have their own playbook.
- Your consistency. Keeping appointments, wearing elastics as prescribed, and protecting the appliance.
- Retention. A retainer plan you will actually follow, because teeth keep drifting for life.
If a practice’s pitch leans mostly on the brand of bracket rather than on your diagnosis, that is a signal worth noticing.

What Adjustment Visits Look Like With Each System
Patients notice the difference most in the chair. With traditional ties, the assistant removes a dozen or more elastics, the orthodontist changes or adjusts the wire, and fresh ties go on one bracket at a time. With self-ligating brackets, each clip is opened, the wire is swapped, and the clips close.
In practice that often means a shorter appointment for the same clinical work, which matters if you are fitting visits around school pickup, a commute from Boston, or a shift schedule. It does not mean fewer visits. Your teeth need time between adjustments regardless — the interval is set by biology, not hardware.
Emergencies differ slightly too. A traditional bracket most often “fails” by losing a tie, which is a quick fix and rarely urgent. Self-ligating brackets occasionally have a clip that stops latching, which needs the bracket replaced rather than re-tied. Either way, call the office instead of waiting for your next scheduled visit — an appliance that is not holding the wire is not moving your teeth.
Cost, Insurance, and Whether You Should Pay More
Some practices charge a premium for self-ligating brackets; others price all fixed braces the same. Since the evidence does not show shorter overall treatment from the clip itself, a large upcharge deserves a straight explanation of what you are buying.
Orthodontic insurance benefits usually apply to comprehensive treatment as a whole rather than to a specific bracket brand, so the coverage question is generally the same across systems. Ask for your fee in writing, ask what happens if treatment runs longer than estimated, and ask whether retainers and retention visits are included.
