(Issued Fall 2017) — During October, National Orthodontic Health Month, Dr. Andrew Chase of ARCH Orthodontics is taking the opportunity to set the record straight, to challenge and debunk common myths about orthodontic treatment. ARCH is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) which sponsors the annual observance.
Among the myths that Dr. Chase addresses:
Myth #1. Anyone who provides braces or clear aligners is an Orthodontist. To be an Orthodontist, a doctor has graduated from dental school, then completed 2-3 years in an accredited Orthodontic residency program. Only doctors with this level of formal education may ethically call themselves ‘Orthodontists.’
Myth #2. Orthodontists are so expensive. Orthodontists charge for the professional service they provide – customizing each patient’s treatment, expertly guiding teeth and jaws into a healthy, beautiful smile. Making it more affordable are flexible payment plans, no-interest financing, and, often, insurance. A healthy bite and great smile — an investment in a lifetime of oral and whole body health.
Myth #3. Office visits are not necessary to get straight teeth. With regular visits, the patient benefits from the Orthodontist’s timely action.
Myth #4. Orthodontic treatment takes years. The time treatment takes depends on the difficulty of the patient’s problem and what the patient wants. Some new technologies can reduce treatment time up to 50%.
Myth #5. Orthodontic treatment is only cosmetic. An improved appearance is the most obvious result. But when teeth and jaws are in alignment, it means function (biting, chewing, speaking) is improved, too.
Myth #6. Orthodontists only offer braces. Orthodontists utilize the full range of appliances, many types of braces, and clear aligners and removable devices. They also prescribe orthotics for TMJ disorder and to help with sleep apnea.
Myth #7. Orthodontic treatment is just for kids. Over 1.5 million adults are being treated by Orthodntists. ARCH’s oldest patient today is 83. She says,” it’s never too late to improve your smile.”
Dr. Chase says, “Confidence may just be a smile away. Don’t delay your dramatically new look and outlook.” To make an appointment at one of ARCH’s 9 offices, call (781) 209-6776. ARCH, the Official Orthodontist of Miss Massachusetts, offers free initial consultation (a $500 value), and interest-free financing. Veterans and members of the military and their families receive a courtesy discount.
