Here’s How They Can Benefit and Be Healthy
February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and the orthodontists at ARCH Orthodontics of Greater Boston would like to take a moment to talk about something we hear quite often from parents. Everyone always wants to know if there are significant warning signs or symptoms that their child or children are going to need some form of orthodontic treatment as they grow older.
At any of our nine orthodontist offices in the Greater Boston area, we talk to so many patients and their parents about the common signs that braces might be necessary in the future. We even have a pediatric dentist on staff (Dr. Karissa Koster) who’s ready to help improve your child’s smile health.
We invite you to give us a call and schedule a no-hassle consultation to discuss treatment options!
REASON #1 – CROWDING
There’s no other reason for needing braces that are more common than crowding! This is true for children, teens, and adults. When teeth are crammed and jammed close together, there’s not enough room for them to grow properly. This leads to a crooked, uneven smile that can be extra prone to cavities and disease because teeth are difficult to keep clean. It’s important to treat crowded teeth early for total smile health!
REASON #2 – UNDERBITES AND OVERBITES
Your ARCH orthodontist in Boston and Cape Cod is loves looking at bites and smile alignment. Abnormal bites such as underbites and overbites mean the positioning of your teeth and your jaw size are improperly proportioned. Typically, overbites mean your top teeth will stick out further than your bottom teeth, with the opposite being true for underbites. This misalignment can lead to issues like:
- Imbalanced facial appearance
- Increased risk of damage to teeth
- Difficulty chewing food or biting
REASON #3 – OPEN BITE
Do your teeth fail to touch when you close your mouth? This means you could have a severe open bite. Sometimes this issue can lead to lisps or other problems speaking.
REASON #4 – CROSSBITE
When your upper teeth fall behind your lower teeth when you bite down, a crossbite is typically to blame. Like other bite issues, this could lead to problems chewing, jaw pain, increased risk for injury or excessive wear, and so much more.
