Braces-Friendly Movie Snacks

With or Without Braces, Everyone Loves A Special Movie Treat

two girls with braces watching a movieAs summer kicks into high gear, a great way to beat the heat is check out one (or two) of the latest Hollywood blockbusters either at the theater or at home. But you can’t watch a movie without a proper snack! Your ARCH orthodontist knows the go-to movie snack is yummy, buttery popcorn. Unfortunately, these delicious kernels don’t work well with braces.

However, there are so many other delicious foods that are compatible (and delicious) that you won’t even mind passing on the popcorn. We’re going to break down the snack nightmares and love stories that come with having braces.

The Good, The Bad, & The Unhealthy

With or without braces, limiting your intake of sugary sweets is always best for you and your teeth. But with regular brushing and flossing, it’s OK to enjoy a small snack while you’re watching a movie. If you have braces, it’s probably best that you avoid these concessions altogether:

  • Gummy worms
  • Bubblegum
  • Nachos
  • Gooey candy bars
  • Caramel chews
  • Hard candies

These foods can break your braces or get caught in them leaving you picking at your teeth instead of making the most of your movie experience.

A Fistful of Snacks

Not everything is off limits at the theater. There are still plenty of delicious snacks that aren’t in danger of causing costly damage to your braces. They include:

  • Chocolates like M&Ms, Hershey bars, Kit Kats, and Reese’s Pieces
  • Soft, fresh-baked cookies
  • Ice cream or frozen yogurt
  • Soft pretzels, potato chips, cheese puffs

If you don’t want to spend the money on snacks at the theater or if you’re watching a movie on the couch, you can always prepare some healthy, braces-friendly foods at home. Things like string cheese, peanut butter and jelly, fruit, crackers, or pudding taste good and travel well.

If you have Invisalign clear aligners, no foods are off limits! Just remember that you will need to take out the aligners if you’re going to enjoy a snack and brush thoroughly afterwards to remove any food particles from your teeth.
