Braces are an investment in yourself and once after getting them, it’s important to take care of them properly to avoid any issues and to ensure they do their job properly. To help you undergo successful treatment, our team at ARCH Orthodontics is sharing their best tips for caring for your braces.
Flossing
Braces are known for getting food stuck in them, making it even more important to floss regularly. Start by flossing twice a day, and after meals, to get the areas your toothbrush might miss. To help make it easier to navigate around your braces while still flossing properly, we highly recommend using a floss threader. Some even have little picks on the end, helping to remove any food that might have gotten stuck in your braces throughout the day.
Brushing
Brushing your teeth twice a day is crucial for keeping your teeth clean and happy but when you have braces, brushing your teeth after every meal will keep your braces looking their best. Always use a fluoride toothpaste and gentle, soft strokes to clean your teeth and get any food that’s stuck in your braces, out.
Use Your Elastics
If your orthodontist has prescribed wearing elastics as part of your orthodontic treatment, it is so important to wear them at all times with the exception of eating and brushing your teeth. The key to this phase of your treatment is consistency and failing to wear your elastics can cause your teeth to move back.
Address Any Damage
If there is any damage to your braces, it’s important to speak up to your orthodontist as soon as possible so they can make any repairs. If you leave the damage for too long, it could lengthen the time of your treatment.
Eat Braces-Friendly Foods
There are several foods that can damage your braces and by staying away from them, you can help ensure a successful treatment. Always stay away from those foods and gravitate towards braces-friendly food options.
